For International Women’s Day, we sit down with Lydia Wong, Group Financial Controller at Alpadis (Hong Kong), to discuss her journey in finance, key industry trends, and her experience breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated space.

What inspired you to pursue a career in finance, and what has kept you motivated?

I initially chose finance for stability and job security, but I grew to love the profession. Working with numbers, problem-solving, and seeing tangible results keep me motivated. I’ve had the opportunity to work across different industries, which has been incredibly enriching.

Can you share a defining moment in your career that shaped your leadership style?

Leading a group audit under a tight deadline was a turning point. I had to coordinate teams across different offices while resolving miscommunications. This experience reinforced the importance of teamwork, open communication, and collaboration, which have since become central to my leadership approach.

What are some key trends shaping finance in the next five years?

  • Digital Transformation – AI and cloud computing will enhance efficiency and decision-making.
  • Regulatory Changes – New compliance requirements, especially in cybersecurity, will be crucial.

How do you think women’s leadership brings unique strengths to this industry?

Women tend to foster a collaborative, risk-aware, and team-oriented work environment. This approach helps drive higher engagement, better decision-making, and more inclusive workplaces.

Have you faced challenges as a woman in your industry, and how did you overcome them?

Early in my career, leadership roles were dominated by men. When I realised opportunities were limited, I made the decision to move on to a company that valued diversity—Alpadis. Here, I’ve seen firsthand how gender equality strengthens an organisation.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you, and how can businesses better support women in leadership?

IWD is a day to celebrate achievements and push for continued progress. Businesses should ensure equal hiring and promotion opportunities while encouraging open dialogue and diverse perspectives in leadership.
